FAQ’s

Is my dog too old to be trained?

No, most of the time people think if their dog is over 4 years old, they are too old to be trained. That is not true. You can teach an old dog new tricks! It really depends on the breed to decide if the dog is too old for training and most of the time the answer to this questions is no.

Is my dog too stubborn to train?

No, again this is a myth. When trained properly, all dogs will benefit from a structured dog training program.

I just want my dog to listen – I don’t care if he/she can sit and stay. Why do I need formal obedience training?

Obedience training is the answer to correcting and modifying unwanted behaviors. Obedience training develops communication between you and your pet and assists in teaching your dog manners and good communication skills. Training your dog also helps increase the bond and relationship between human and hound.

How do I choose a dog that suits my family and our lifestyle?

First, you need to decide if you want a puppy or adult dog. There are advantages and disadvantages with both. Puppies need a lot of attention, they lack toilet training and are usually more financially expensive. Adult dogs by nature should be able to hold for longer periods of time for toilet training, are able to retain information for longer periods but you do not get to see the dog grow into its adult self. You should consider your environment and the type of dog you select should fit in with the surroundings in which you live. In choosing your pet, you also have to decide if you want a high energy or a more laid back animal. If you work 12 hour days, you will not do well with a dog that demands a lot of attention. Different breeds are known for different traits, some are athletic, some are couch potatoes and most are somewhere in between. Most importantly, please consider very carefully where you get your puppy or your adult dog from. Always try your local rescue center first, then the services of a reputable Breeder. Of course, when choosing a new dog, you are best to consult with a professional.

What do I need to have if I am getting a new puppy?

You will need to have a large enough sleeping area or crate to make sure he / she is comfortable. Some training pads are also helpful for beginners and those pups who are not fully toilet trained. Wipes may also offer you some peace of mind if your puppy has not yet been fully vaccinated. The list is endless, however the most basic necessities are a leash, collar, legal tags, toys, beds and two bowls for water and food. At City Sit Stay, we always try to make your puppy’s life as positive and constructive as possible and therefore treats and toys are most important. Of course, your can do attitude and positive vibes always make the world of difference…. bring those too!

How old does my puppy have to be to attend training?

City Sit Stay accepts dogs of all ages to its Basic Obedience Training. Puppies are also welcome, however, we do recommend that puppies from 8 weeks of age, first follow the Puppy Socialization Training which we offer prior to moving to the Manners and Obedience. This is mostly because their focus and concentration is limited.

How do I meet other people who have dogs in my neighborhood?

At City Sit Stay, we have socialization groups and our group training sessions are a safe and excellent gathering place to meet other dog lovers. We also have special events presentations where you can learn from the experts.

How often are the classes, how long do the sessions last and how many dogs and dog lovers are in the course?

Group classes meet once a week over a period 6 weeks for one hour each session.  Special training sessions, however, may be over a shorter or longer time span as arranged. Classes will be strictly regulated for size to ensure that individual masters and their companions get all the attention that they deserve and need to ensure successful graduation.

What training methods do you use at City Sit Stay?

We use positive reinforcement, at times with a clicker or by verbal cues. Treats and toys are used as motivators and we always use a generous helping of love, pats and patience. Toys and play are also rewards for good listening, good following and positive reinforcement. We do not use electric shock collars, choke collars or any kind of contraption for management. These methods can lead to fear and aggression.

Can I visit your facility before I commit to anything?

City Sit Stay enjoys interaction with our clients and encourages participation in all our events. You are always welcome to visit but an appointment should be made in advance by contacting us at info@citysitstay.com. An audit of one of our classes with your puppy can also be arranged.

What should I bring to my first class at City Sit Stay?

Besides your enthusiasm, you will need a 4 to 6 foot leash and a collar or harness. We do not accept retractable leashes , choke or prong collars. A must have would also be a small bag of treats and a toy or two. These would be wonderful rewards for good following, listening and obeying. Please pay attention to your introductory e-mail about more specific tools required.

Can I enroll my puppy in class if he has not had all his shots as yet?

Yes, you can enroll him as long as you show proof that he has had his first round of shots. As a precaution, some of our clients bring their puppy in a small carrier until such time as the series of shots are completed, others use baby wipes as a quick and easy clean up for those busy feet.

Can I bring both of my dogs to the same class and is the price adjusted for having two dogs trained at the same time?

You can certainly bring your two dogs to the same class but experience has shown that since they are usually closely bonded, they may distract each other. We really do suggest that they be enrolled in separate classes. We also suggest a visit to City Sit Stay with both dogs before the commitment is made so that an assessment can be done as to their relationship and suitability to train together.

Some trainers use a clicker. What is it and do I have to get one?

A clicker is a small, hand held device that allows you to give quick and accurate feedback to your dog. Its quick response means that it is timely so that the action is almost immediate. The dog will begin to associate the click sound with reward and therefore the good behaviour is reinforced. We also use the one word verbal marker such as good! or “Yes!”, praising the dog for good work and perhaps rewarding with a treat.

I’m having my first baby. How can I prepare my dog for this event?

This will be entirely dependent upon the training that your pooch has received in the past. Assessments for current level of obedience and any additional training can be arranged and one or more private session may be called for.  An appointment should be made well in advance of your happy event by contacting us at info@citysitstay.co
